What WE DO
AKIL AUGUSTINE
Our lead workshop facilitator and founder Akil Augustine is a graduate of Seneca College's Radio & Television Broadcast Journalism Program. He began his professional career at SportsNet as a Freelance Producer covering the Blue Jays and the NBA. In 2006 Akil joined M LSE as a digital content producer and online host for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto FC.
Akil was part of the team that launched the Raptors into the social media space on Twitter/X and Instagram. Among his career highlights are covering the NBAGLeague for ESPN and being the world pool feed reporter for the 2019 NBA Champion Toronto Raptors Parade. Today Akil continues to work with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment as a social media content producer, sideline reporter for the Toronto Raptors and as a television host for NBATVCanada.
Akil has worked in the influencer space as a Brand Ambassador for Coors Light and Miller Genuine Draft. He has created product campaigns for Nike and Chapters/ Indigo. He has served as a host and social media contributor for OVO, Adidas Staples, PointsBET and Canada Basketball and can be seen across the nation as a recurring contributor on the CBC, CP24 and Global News.

This workshop addresses the emotional risks of social media, including comparison, FOMO, cyberbullying, and harassment. Students will gain the language and tools to navigate these challenges and protect their mental well-being online. Parents and educators will leave with a better understanding of young people's online behaviors and practical strategies to support them in managing their digital lives. This workshop also fosters open dialogue, creating a safe space for students, parents, and educators to share experiences and discuss ways to build healthier online habits.

In this workshop series, we explore the impact of influencers on societal views of success, popularity, and beauty. Students will analyze how influencers shape trends and consumer behavior, dive into the business models behind collaborations, sponsorships, and brand partnerships, and discuss the ethical responsibilities of promoting products and lifestyles. By developing critical thinking skills, students will learn to differentiate between authentic and curated content. The series culminates in a collaborative project, where participants create original content, gaining hands-on experience in roles like writing, producing, performing, editing, and publishing, while learning from industry professionals.

In this workshop series, we dive deep into the role of social media in shaping modern communication, branding, and online communities. Participants will explore how social platforms influence trends, personal identity, and consumer choices, while analyzing the business side of social media—sponsorships, collaborations, and partnerships. Through hands-on experience, students will learn the skills of content creation, digital marketing, and brand storytelling. The series will culminate in a final project, where participants will create and execute their own digital campaigns, gaining valuable insights from industry experts along the way.
